The Guide To Your Little Daemons

Dot! Fresh Install

Do you have an old PC or laptop standing useless in the corner? Did you always want to have your own web and mail server? Are you interested in a stable and secure P2P filesharing system? Well, then this guide is for you. After spending a lot of time searching and reading in the Internet regarding a simple, sufficient, fast and secure server setup for an old PC I'm giving you here all the required information in an easy-to-follow step-by-step guide.

This guide is based on the following hardware:
- old Laptop with a K6-3 380MHz CPU, Intel chipset
- 256MB RAM
- 20GB harddisk

This is pretty much "standard" and you can use almost every configuration you may find even with a slow CPU, 64MB RAM and a 2GB harddisk.

Requirements:
- reasonable fast network connection (we're going to download some 100 megabytes)
- FreeBSD 4.10 Stable (either on a distribution CD or a downloaded/burned ISO image
??(4.10-RELEASE-i386-miniinst.iso)
???=>If you choose to download, please use a mirror close to your location.
???????A list is available at FreeBSD Mirror Sites

Please make sure, that the harddrive is free for it's new purpose and everything you may still need is backed up. We're going to wipe it out and use it to 100% for FreeBSD. Load the FreeBSD-CD into your drive and restart your machine (it may be necessary to adjust the BIOS settings to boot from CD). It takes a couple of seconds while boot messages will be shown and if the booting works properly you will be greeted with this screen:

FreeBSD Start ??? We do not want to configure the kernel or change parameters, so simply press ENTER.

The next screen opens up the FreeBSD sysInstall Menu. If you have a non-english keyboard, please change the setting accordingly. This setting will be used for the installation as well as for the final setup.

Keymap setting ??? Please move to the Keymap menu and change the setting according to the keyboard type you have. If you use an english one you can skip this step.

Now we are already done with the basic settings and move on to a standard installation.

Standard Installation     Select the second menu option "Standard" to start with the installation.
